Bird vs. House

Excitement for the day…

An adult red-tailed hawk slammed into the house at 1pm. I heard a bang like someone slamming the house with a baseball bat or equivalent to a rock being thrown hard at the house.

I thought maybe something had fallen of the kitchen counter, since birds normally hit windows with more of a BONG sound. I grabbed a glass of water and walked around the house to find a hawk laying and struggling in the grass. I moved slowly and watched it. It was moving its head and moving back in forth with its wings slightly spread. I left it there and called a few agencies who kept referring me to more agencies. It’s amazing how hard it is to find a wild animal help number.

I finally got a hold of someone at Dept of Fish and Game. They basically said wait another hour as the bird may just be dazed. Sure enough, as I finally grabbed a camera and walked out there, it was fluttering away to a distant tree. Tough bugger.

It was amazing to see it up close with its deep red feathers. Quite impressive.
